What is Diode Laser Hair Removal?

A diode laser passes over the skin and the energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, heating the follicle enough to slow what it produces. It is worked by area — underarms, legs, arms, bikini, upper lip, cheeks, or the whole body — and the area decides the time and the number of sessions, not the other way round.

It reduces hair; it does not promise to end it. Hair grows in cycles and a laser only reaches the follicles that are active on the day, which is the whole reason this is a course spaced over months rather than a single appointment. Pale or fine hair carries less pigment and responds less well, and you should be told that at the assessment rather than after the third session.

This reduces hair; it does not abolish it. The laser finds pigment, so pale, grey and very fine hair respond poorly and sometimes not at all — and no number of extra sessions changes that, which is why it is said before a course rather than during one. It is also not a treatment for the cause of unwanted hair: where growth is driven by a hormonal condition, the hair will keep being produced and that belongs with a doctor.

Time
Minutes for an upper lip, considerably longer for legs or a whole body
Downtime
Redness and a warm, bristly feeling for a day
Sessions
A course spaced across months, following the growth cycle
Results
Thinner and slower regrowth through the course; maintenance after
Comfort
A hot snap against the skin, with the handpiece cooling as it passes
Who it is for

Is this the right treatment for you?

Shaving leaving the skin dark or bumpy?

Much underarm darkening is friction and shaving rather than pigment at depth. Removing the cause is often more effective than treating the result.

Prone to ingrown hair?

This is one of the better answers to recurring ingrowns, and worth raising specifically at consultation.

Fair, grey or very fine hair?

It responds less well, because the laser needs pigment to find. You should be told this before you book a course, not during one.

Booked a holiday?

Plan around it. Recent sun on the treatment area means the session is postponed, and that is a safety decision rather than an inconvenience.

When it is not appropriate

Pregnancy or breastfeeding, active infection or inflamed skin in the treatment area, recent isotretinoin use, photosensitising medication, and a history of keloid scarring all need to be raised before anything is booked. Tell the practitioner about every medication and supplement you are taking. Recent sun exposure or a tan on the area, recent waxing or plucking, photosensitising medication, and tattoos in the treatment area all change what can be done safely. Shave the area rather than waxing it before a session.

How it works

What happens in a session

01

Assess and patch test

Skin tone and hair type are assessed and a test patch is done before a course is agreed.

02

Prepare

The area is shaved and cleaned, and eye protection is fitted for everyone in the room.

03

Treat

The handpiece is worked across the area in passes, with cooling as it goes.

04

Space and repeat

The next session is set to the growth cycle for that area rather than to a fixed calendar.

Questions

Diode Laser Hair Removal, answered

Is it permanent?

It is permanent reduction rather than permanent removal. Most people finish a course with far less hair that grows back slower and finer, and most keep that with occasional maintenance.

How many sessions?

It depends on the area and on you. It is always several, spaced across months, because the laser only reaches follicles that are actively growing that day.

Does it hurt?

It is usually described as a hot snap against the skin. The handpiece cools as it works and the settings are adjusted to what you can tolerate.

Can it be done on dark skin?

Diode lasers are generally better suited to a range of skin tones than older systems, but the setting matters enormously and a patch test comes first. That is not a formality.

When will I see a difference?

Shedding begins in the weeks after each session and the area thins across the course. Judge it at the end of the course, not after the first one.

How long does it last?

Permanent reduction rather than permanent removal. Most people hold the result with occasional maintenance once the course is done.

Can I combine it with other treatments?

Commonly run alongside underarm clearing or pigment work, since shaving is often what caused the darkening in the first place. Spacing is planned so nothing is done on skin that is still recovering.
