Sculptra
A biostimulator that prompts your own collagen rather than adding volume directly.
- Overall volume loss
- Hollow temples
- Flattened cheeks
- Skin thinning with age
- Gradual change
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra does not fill. It is placed under the skin and prompts your own body to lay down collagen over the following months, so the change arrives slowly and from your own tissue rather than from a gel.
That slowness is the whole proposition and also the thing people underestimate. A course is spread over months, nothing much happens at first, and the result is judged at the end rather than after each appointment. If you want to see a difference when you leave, this is not the treatment and you should be told so.
This is slow by design and cannot be hurried, so it is the wrong treatment for an event in six weeks. It is also not reversible: unlike hyaluronic acid filler there is no enzyme that dissolves it, which is the single most important thing to understand before consenting. Skipping the aftercare massage is the usual cause of lumps, and that part is genuinely your responsibility.

- Allow an hour per session
- Downtime

- Sessions
- A course, spaced across months
- Results
- Builds over months, judged at the end of the course
- Comfort
- Pressure during, tenderness after, and the massage is on you
Is this the right treatment for you?
Want change nobody can point to?
Gradual is what this does, and it is why people choose it over filler.
Lost volume across the whole face rather than in one spot?
A general, diffuse loss suits this better than a targeted one.
Prepared to do the aftercare?
Massage is part of the treatment, not an optional extra, and it matters.
Want it done before next month?
Then this is the wrong treatment. It is measured in months and cannot be hurried.
When it is not appropriate
This is a medical procedure and it is carried out by a doctor. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, any bleeding or clotting disorder, blood-thinning medication, active infection or inflamed skin in the treatment area, a history of keloid scarring, and any autoimmune or neuromuscular condition all have to be raised before anything is booked. Bring a full list of your medicines and supplements, including the ones you would not think to mention. None of this is surgery and none of it substitutes for surgery. Where what you want is a surgical result, the honest answer is a surgeon, and you should be given that answer here rather than sold a course of something that cannot reach it.
What happens in a session
Assess
Suitability and expectations are both assessed — the second more carefully than the first.
Treat
The preparation is placed across the area and the aftercare massage demonstrated.
Repeat
Further sessions across the following months, spaced by the doctor.
Judge at the end
The course is assessed as a whole against the baseline photographs.

Sculptra, answered
How is this different from filler?
Filler adds volume immediately and can be dissolved. This prompts your own collagen over months and cannot be reversed, which is why the consultation is more careful.
Why so much massage?
It distributes the product evenly while the tissue responds, and skipping it is the most common reason people end up with a lump. It is part of the treatment.
When will I see a difference?
Months. The first session often shows nothing at all, which is expected rather than a failure.
How long does it last?
Usually a couple of years, because the result is your own collagen rather than a product sitting in the tissue.
Can I combine it with other treatments?
Often planned with other work, but the spacing matters and is set by the doctor rather than by what is convenient.
