What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of visible light rather than heat, abrasion or anything injected. The light reaches the skin at a shallow depth and is used to calm inflammation, support the collagen response, and settle skin that has been worked on.

It is a supporting treatment and it is honest about that. There is no downtime and nothing to feel beyond warmth, which is why it is most often added to the end of a facial rather than booked on its own. As the whole of a plan it is not enough; as part of one it is comfortable and it accumulates.

Light is a supporting treatment, not a replacement for one. On its own it will not lift, will not clear pigment at depth and will not resolve active cystic acne, which needs a doctor rather than a lamp. What it does well it does slowly and cumulatively, which is why a single session is close to pointless and a course is not.

Who it is for

Is this the right treatment for you?

Skin reactive and easily irritated?

There is no heat and no abrasion, which is why this suits skin that reacts to most things.

Just had a laser or a strong facial?

It is frequently used afterwards to settle the skin and support recovery.

Want zero downtime before an event?

There is nothing at all to recover from. You can go straight back to your day.

Hoping it will replace a stronger treatment?

It will not, and you should be told so. This supports a plan rather than being one.

When it is not appropriate

Pregnancy or breastfeeding, active infection or inflamed skin in the treatment area, recent isotretinoin use, photosensitising medication, and a history of keloid scarring all need to be raised before anything is booked. Tell the practitioner about every medication and supplement you are taking. Light-sensitive conditions and photosensitising medication matter particularly here.

Questions

Red Light Therapy, answered

Is this the same as Phototherapy?

No, and the difference matters. This is visible red light for skin comfort and quality. Phototherapy here is narrowband UV, a medical treatment for diagnosed eczema and psoriasis, with a dose that is recorded and supervised. Different machines, different purpose.

Will I feel anything?

Warmth, and nothing more. It is the most comfortable treatment offered here.

Can it replace my acne treatment?

No. It supports an acne plan and is often part of one, but it is not a treatment for acne on its own and you should be told that plainly.

When will I see a difference?

Redness and irritation often look calmer the same day. Anything beyond that builds across repeated sessions.

How long does it last?

The effect is cumulative rather than permanent, and most people have it as part of a wider plan rather than as a standalone course.

Can I combine it with other treatments?

This is the treatment most often added to something else — comfortable, no downtime, and well suited to skin that has just been worked on.
